A few thoughts:
1. My husband and I have a rule- no phone calls while we are at dinner (in or out of the house.) It is about respect and caring.
2.When you are with someone, it is important to be *with* that someone.
3. Awareness of the world requires kindness toward self and others. Have we forgotten what it means to be kind?
4. I for one will retweet the message by @indranislight - "Get off the phone and play with your kids."

Thanks for the thoughtful post, Pat!

it is so easy to for technology to encroach on our lives. I think we have all been in situations where we have let an incoming phone take a higher priority than our our children, me included. Sometimes we just need to regroup and set a new path for how we want to behave.
About 6 months ago, I made a pact with my 12 year-old daughter that I wouldn't make or recieve calls when I was in the car with her. It took a few days of really resisting the urge to dial the phone, but since then, it's been great for for both of us.

Yes, put down the phone -- better yet, give it a "time out" every so often.
